The issues of biodiversity are very similar to the issues that threaten cultural diversity. Like many of the unique species that have developed over time out of variations and environmental factors, an expansive variety of cultures are also present in the world. Like species, the wide range of cultures also come out of social needs and differences of opinions, but are special to society in some way no matter how big, common, small, or hidden they are. Each of these cultures is distinct to a particular people and makes the world so incredibly interesting of a place to live. The differences in ideas, customs, and lifestyles allow for improvements, innovation, and global awareness because there are so many options to take into consideration. For these reasons, governments should protect cultural diversity because once these cultures are gone they might never come back. By having such an large spectrum of cultures, there is no way to have one ruling philosophy, but once they are limited, it is possible for one culture to dominate, taking away all individuality that exists in the world.
The issues that threaten biodiversity can also be applied to cultural diversity. Invasive species are a huge problem in many environments because they destroy the species that are endemic to those areas. This is an aggressive act of nature that can be seen in society as well with cultures taking dominance over other cultures and eventually eradicating them altogether. Similarly, pollution like agricultural runoff or industrial byproducts contaminate the species naturally founds in regions. This is also a concern for cultural diversity as cultures slowly force their beliefs into other cultures until the original one is either removed completely or morphed into something new that no longer represents the original. The problem with this phenomenon is that it is not only damaging because of the loss of a species or culture, but also has radiating effects that affect a larger population. Like each individual species that plays a vital role in an ecosystem, each culture had a role in society that would not be as able to function without one of the key components.
Some, usually from a dominant party, disagree with allocating government resources on the protection of diversity because they believe there are more important issues at hand. They do not recognize the importance of cultural diversity and; therefore, do not believe that the government should spend its resources on protecting it. These proponents do not understand the idea that each tiny piece makes up a bigger, greater picture that is the world. Our world has so many unique characteristics, both naturally and socially, that makes it such a wonderful place to exist. The differences in opinions have helped to establish the society that is present today and could not have formed without the adaptions from various other philosophies.
